PPS Statement on Vouchers

At its October, 1996 meeting in Jackson, Mississippi, the PPS National Board unanimously approved the following statement on public school vouchers.

"Parents for Public Schools values public education as a community enterprise. PPS chapters organize to recruit families to public schools, to promote and focus positive attention on public schools, and to work for improvements within the public schools. PPS strives to maximize parent involvement and consolidate community resources by working together to ensure a quality and equitable education for all children.

In keeping with our mission, PPS unequivocally opposes vouchers, tuition tax credits or any programs which divert public resources from the public schools or divide the potential constituency for those schools. Parents for Public Schools values the rights and responsibilities of parents to be decision makers in the public schools and favors choice within the public school system. We believe the issues of such choice should be decided at the local level."
