PPS REGIONALS #3 - A GREAT SUCCESS IN CLEVELAND, OH
Three PPS chapters from New York and three from Ohio spent a weekend in Cleveland to participate in Regional Session # 3 held at the Embassy Suites Downtown. Cleveland, a former PPS community, was selected based on survey responses from chapter leaders last spring. More than 20 representatives received a half day each of intense training in core principles of Fundraising and Membership Development. Exchanging samples of chapter work, chapter strategies and their own expertise, participants re-energized in PPS tradition during this day and a-half gathering. Read some of the comments from the evaluations: “Membership is a very critical issue for us and we are thrilled to have the materials to take back and review and use in future planning.” “Thank you. I love the Regional contacts and sharing opportunities.” “Really appreciated the perspective on ways to network shared by other chapters”
The majority of the attending PPS’ers had been with their local chapter between 3 and 5 years. Most were either chapter officers or board members and more were either elementary school parents or parents of high school graduates/ college students. Cincinnati had the largest delegation with eight of its nine registrants attending. Syracuse had the longest drive---six hours one way, and Oberlin the shortest, 45 minutes. Preliminary chapter assessments revealed that local chapter budgets within this region ranged from $500 to $171,000 and membership numbers spanned 30 to 250 members (2003 reported). Oberlin, OH represented the smallest school district at 1,094, and Buffalo, NY the largest at 43,474.
Joe Zielinski, Co-Pres. of Toledo PPS, organized a pre-conference presentation by Dan Romano of Root EdVentures on group process-a “learning map” developed in conjunction with Knowledge-Works that helps communities address issues around public school funding in Ohio.
On Friday evening Ken Rolling, PPS National’s Executive Director, provided an overview of the PPS National strategic plan and some of the findings of the final draft of the national evaluation report for discussion. Marianne Philbin, a trainer and consultant with over 25 years of experience in the nonprofit sector and author of How Effective Nonprofits Work, joined Gopika Malhotra, PPS National’s Director of Development, in presenting “Fundraising Power Tools: How Chapters Can Increase Fundraising Success” on Saturday morning. That afternoon Amina Shahid-El, PPS Director of Chapter Services and Training, conducted “Building Membership: Making Numbers Count.”
Participants received background material prior to the meeting, a Saul Alinsky reading assignment during the training, and each chapter is expected to engage in post-training activities to extend their learning. PPS Natl. Board members Kim Rohadfox-Ceaser and Linda Roberts took advantage of this weekend training.
