The vision of From the Schoolhouse to the Statehouse
is to build a sustainable network of
empowered
parents to achieve excellence in
public education
throughout Mississippi.
Parent engagement is a critical component to the success of students and schools. Parents who understand various approaches to student learning, accountability data, how school systems operate, and a diverse level of other related subjects can define educational excellence for their communities. The goal of Schoolhouse to Statehouse is to empower parents throughout Mississippi to become actively involved in decision-making at the local district level and to become informed and powerful advocates, not only for their own child, but all of Mississippi’s school-age children.
The Schoolhouse to Statehouse strategy will engage parents in peer-to-peer learning sessions around specific educational topics and build their leadership skills so that they might more effectively and proactively participate in local school issues. Proactive parent involvement moves beyond homework oversight and field trips into understanding academic requirements and the basis for decisions that affect the learning environment. Engaged and properly trained and equipped parents will move beyond individual school issues to address broader issues that impact an entire district, and together with other parents can affect change at the state level.
