Jackson Chapter Programs and Activities

ó      For the third consecutive year, 400,000 copies of our Helping Your Child Succeed in School brochures are being published in partnership with the Mississippi Department of Education.  These parent-friendly brochures developed by PPS highlight what children are expected to know at each grade level (K-8) and give parents valuable tips on how to support learning at home as well as monitor their children’s progress in school.  They are being sent to every school district in the state for distribution to their local families.

ó      The PPS Parent Leadership Institute provides extensive training and coaching for parents interested in designing and implementing school or district projects to improve student achievement.

ó   PPS offers a series of workshops to schools,  neighborhood associations, and faith-based institutions interested in increasing parent involvement.  They include:  · Helping Your Child Succeed in School  ·  Are you Ready to be a Kindergarten Parent?  ·  Developing Your Child’s Roadmap to College.

ó      PPS Staff presents workshops on how to increase parent involvement and understanding the No Child Left Behind Act at the annual Jackson Public Schools Parent Conference, Mississippi Department of Education statewide Improving Schools Conference, at the Mississippi Association of School Superintendents, and the Mississippi School Boards Association conference.

ó      PPS continues to serve as a leading partner in the Ask for More Collaborative, a school reform effort that develops strategies for leadership development of school administrators, continuous professional training for teachers, networking opportunities for educators and school counselors, and programs to help more students go to college – and the Jackson Integrated Arts Collaborative, a project to integrate arts education into Jackson Public Schools classrooms.

ó      Our Checklist for College-Bound Seniors, developed through the Ask for More Collaborative, was included in the 2004 Parents and Kids Magazine College Planner publication.  The 2006 edition will once again be distributed to 80,000 students throughout the state of Mississippi in Fall 2006.

ó      PPS offers monthly Lunch Bunch programs to educate the community about public school issues, to provide a safe space for open and honest conversations about these issues, and to encourage networking with other parents and community leaders.  Programs include such topics as Report from the District Superintendent, Conversations with the School Board, Meeting Educational Needs at the Juvenile Detention Facility, Conversations with Legislators, Conversations with the State Superintendent of Education, Report from the William Winter Institute on Racial Reconciliation.

ó      PPS staff members assist families who are considering their education options by providing school tours and connecting them to district representatives or other public school families.

ó      PPS works constructively with the Jackson Public School district to identify and solve district-wide problems and to strengthen public education for all of Jackson’s children.

ó      Through our collaborative work and partnerships with local organizations such as Jackson 2000, The 100 Black Men, Links, Inc., Operation Shoestring, and North Midtown Community Development Center, PPS works to promote racial and ethnic diversity and harmony in the City of Jackson.
